Title contenders Netherlands, beat Qatar 2-0 in the other group game (both games played at the same time), to head the group & move into the knockout stages, where they will await the runners up of Group B. After a rather quiet 25 minutes, Cody Gakpo opened the scoring with a fine drive into the left had corner of the net from just outside the box, & then later, just after the half time, Frenkie de Jong followed up a rebound from a Depay shot, to put the ball past two defenders into the net. They were never troubled by minnows Qatar, but it was surprising to see that they did not push the accelerator to score more., which would've given the strikers some good match practice. Steven Berghuis did put the ball in the net, but VAR check revealed a Gakpo handball.
Host Qatar lost all the three games, but should take home a lot of learning to improve their game ahead.
