Senegal beat Ecuador 2-1 in their last group stage game, to advance into the round of 16, despite being without their star player Sadio Mane, out for injury.
Ecuador looked tentative & would've gone behind in the early stages itself, but Gueye shot wide with an open net in front of him. Minutes later again, Gueye danced through the Ecuadorian defense, only to have his shot ricocheting wide. Senegal were rewarded for their persistence, as Sarr raced into the box, only to be bundled by Hincapie in a late challenge & the referee pointed to the spot. Sarr took the kick & dinked the keeper to bury the ball in the bottom right corner - a superb kick to get Senegal up & running at 1-0, just around the half time.
Just around the stroke of an hour play, Ecuador find their attack, & from a excellent corner kick by Plata, Torres rose high in the crowded area to flick at the far post & Caicedo, staying unmarked, slotted the ball home to level the score. However, Senegal were the more intent today & they found their lead back again within minutes, as Gueye swung a fabulous ball from a free kick inot the box, & from a goal moth melee, Koulibaly thumped the ball into the net. Ecuador, staring into elimination, strived hard & came close to scoring, but Lady Luck stayed away from them, & finally it was Senegal who prevailed 2-1, making it to the knock out stages. Ecuador, who had started the campaign with a facile win over Qatar, had themselves to blame, as they needed just a draw to qualify, but lost.
