England wiped away Wales 3-0 in an authoritative display of football to book their place in the last 16, as Wales crashed out of the tournament with a rather insipid performance.
The game started slow, as Wales stayed deep in defense to frustrate the English formation & attempt counter attacks when in possession. The game drifted up & down, albeit in a slow build up & the scoreline remained goalless in the 1st half.
However, with Gareth Bale, Wales' talisman player leaving the field injured, all floodgates opened, as in the 50th minute, Marcus Rashford opened the scoring with a stunning free-kick from 20 yards that went past the flailing keeper. This was the first free kick goal of this world cup. Minutes later Phil Foden added to the tally, as the sluggish Welsh defence failed to block a low cross from Harry Kane into the box & Foden tapped the ball into an empty unguarded net. Just after the hour mark, Rashford was on the score sheet again, as Philips floated the ball past the defenders & The ManU striker stepped in to power a low shot that deflected off Ward into the net to make it 3-0, game set & match for England. This goal incidentally was the 100 goal World Cup goal for England, & Rashford now has 3 goals to his credit in one edition, which equals no less than Bobby Charlton of ManU in 1966.
A brilliant Rashford brace & one from Foden marked England's entry into the round of 16, rather easily, as Wales exit tamely. They now face Group A runners up Senegal.
