In a tightly contested game, Belgium wore down Canada to a narrow 1-0 win in the opening game of Group F.
Canada started brightly against their much more fancied opponents & earned a penalty early into the match, as Yannick Carrasco needlessly handled the ball in their own box & Davies stepped up to take the spot kick. However, Courtois under the bar, guessed correctly to dive to his right & save Belgium the blushes of going down, as he so regularly does & Davies on rebound ballooned the ball over the net - a huge missed opportunity by Canada, which would come to rue them at the end of the game. Canada had multiple attempts at the Belgium goal, but Courtois stood firm, & towards the end of the first half, against the run of play, Belgium took the lead, as Batshuayi received a long pass from their own deep third & volleyed past the Canadian keeper Borjan into the net.
2nd half too, saw Canada stride hard to find the net, but were thwarted by the all covering monster Courtois, as the Red Devils managed to hold on to their slender lead till the end. Belgium will carry this win as a confidence booster ahead, & will hope to regale as the tournament proceeds, with the like of Kevin DeBruyne, Eden Hazard Carrasco, Tielmans commanding the pitch. Meanwhile, Canada would hopefully carry the form of this match into their next & score to win & stay in contention.
