FIFA World Cup : Saudi Arabia vs Mexico

Mexico combatted Saudi Arabia in their last group stage match, with both sides needing a win to qualify for the knock outs. Both teams were intense & hard working in the 1st half, without results, as finishing was poor. The game was fast paced, but without any goals in the 1st half.

2nd half sprung into action, as the hard working Mexicans found a chink in the Arabian defense, & from a corner, playmaker Chavez swung a cross & Montes passed it to an unmarked Martin who slotted the ball past the keeper to break the deadlock. Minutes later, Chavez blasted a free kick into the Saudi Arabian net over the outstretched keeper. With the winds up in their sail Mexico started to dominate the proceedings & went all out for another goal that would ensure their entry into knock out stages. they came close to scoring a number of times & were plain unlucky today not to get another couple of goals, & credit will go to the Saudi Arabian keeper Al- Owais for some outstanding saves. In the dying minutes of injury time, Saudi Arabia got back one goal, as Al Dawsari played a lovely one two one with Bahbri & then beat keeper Ochoa to slot the ball home to take the score to 1-2. Fascinating match, with both sides putting in their heart & soul, only to exit from group stages.

It was heartbreak for Mexico to come so close & yet miss the bus to next round. They remained 3rd in the group & behind Poland on goal difference. Saudi Arabia, who had started their campaign by stunning Argentina 2-1, also needed a victory today to have any chance of qualifying.
