In a fascinating duel, Morocco took on a feisty Canada in their last group encounter & in a nervy encounter, the North African outfit qualified for the round of 16 for the first time in 30 years, defeating Canada 2-1.
Very early in the game, Alistair Johnston's back pass was poor & keeper Borjan had to rush out & his heavy touch left him stranded out & allowed Hakim Ziyech to lob the ball into an empty net from outside the box to lead 1-0. En-Nesyri doubled the lead in the 23rd minute, after running in to receive Hakimi's long pass & smashed it beyond Borjan inside the near post to go up 2-0. Canada came back just before half time, when Aguerd back passed beyond keeper Bono into his own goal, gifting a goal to Canada & bringing down the deficit to 2-1.
2nd half was more frenetic as Canada pressed hard for an equaliser, while Morocco soaked up the pressure & went for occasionaly counter attacks. in the 72nd minute Hutchinson's header beat all but somehow did not enter the Moroccon goal, bouncing oof the goal line.
In the end Morocco prevailed & celebrations started, as they top the group to go into the knock outs, in one of the most improbable results. The team has the potential for further upsets, if they can keep their cool & game in place. They will face the runners up from Group E.
