In an insipid display, in front of a near empty stadium, hosts Qatar were blanked off by Ecuador 0-2, as the tournament kicked off, rather tamely. It just did not feel like a World Cup opener after all the glitz of the opening ceremony. After a 3rd minute header goal by Captain Valencia was disallowed after a VAR check, he made amends with a penalty around the 13th minute & later he extended the lead with a super header in the 32nd minute. The score line could've been worse for the hosts, but for Ecuador's inability to make the most of the situation, & they may regret this as an opportunity lost later in the Group Stages.
As hosts, Qatar became the first country to lose the opening match ever, as they were out muscled, outplayed & out thought throughout the game.
Hopefully, the matches henceforth bring better entertainment.
