Reigning Champions, France started their campaign in fashion, easily swatting past Australia 4-1, despite early shivers, for another upset for the evening.
Australia started in whirlwind fashion, & shocked the crowd with a goal in the 9th minute, as Souttar's cross was taken by Leckie around right wing end & his brilliant low cross was met by Goodwin, who blasted the ball high into the net. This was the fastest goal of this World Cup till now at under 9 minutes, as France looked dazed on the pitch, as Lucas Hernandez had to be replaced with a knee injury.
However, Les Blues came to their being & in the 27th minute, Rabiot found the much needed equalizer for them, heading in from a corner. Within minutes, Giroud fired into an empty net to give France the lead, after a neat one two one with Mbappe. The 1st half ended with the Champions on clear ascendency.
Giroud was in maverick form, toying with the Aussie defense, as Mbappe joined the scoring list with a neat header, in the 68th minute, while Giroud added to his tally in the 71st minute, taking him at par with Thierry Henry as the top goal scorer for France. In a fine display, France became the first reigning champions to win their opening game since Brazil did in 2006.
