World Cup 2011 : Australia vs Sri Lanka...

Sri Lanka against Australia...a mouth watering contest, between the two finalists from the last World Cup in the Caribeans, ending in a tame tie due to rain.

Sangakkara won the toss & elected to bat, with a clear intention of putting up a formidable total & then challenge the reigning Champions. Brett Lee & Shaun Tait started the bowling for the visitors, as Dilshan & Tharanga took guard at the centre. In the 2nd over itself there was enough evidence of the fierce competition between the two teams. Tait steaming in to Dilshan & getting dispatched for a boundary....immediate exchange of heated words.....however, Dilshan lost the fight as he edged one to Cameroon White in the 2nd slip. It was 6 for 1, as the Aussies huddled for a mini victory. Next man in Sanga, decided to take the fight to the Aussies, as Tharanga tried keeping things quiet at the other end. However, in the 7th over, Steve Smith took a blinder, as Tharanga cut Lee towards point....it was a stunner of a catch, & suddenly, the Lankans were on the back foot, score reading 31 for 2. At crease the most experienced Lankan pair, Sanga & Mahela, obviously had a tough task of building the innings.
However, Mahela fell to a brilliant run out orchestrated by Steve Smith against the run of play & the Lankans looked in a spot of bother with the score at 75 for 3 in the 16th over. As Samaraweera came in & joined Captain Sanga in the middle, the sky was turning dark, with prospects of rain imminent.
Anyways, Sanga completed his fifty in style , as rain started to pour in. By the 33rd over the score read 146 for 3, with Sanga on 73 & Samarweera at 34, looking at a recovery. However, rain forced the Umpires to call off play, & that was that for the day. The match finally abandoned as a tie. A shame to lose this match to weather conditions, as it had all the makings of a humdinger.
