Reigning Champions France became the first team in this World Cup to qualify for the knock out stages. And they did so by going past a resilient Denmark 2-1, thanks to a brace from from their mercurial forward Kylian Mbappe.
Despite creating multiple chances, France could not break the Danish citadel in the first half. Giroud, Rabiot, Kounde, Mbappe, Griezmann all had good opportunities to score, but either it was Danish keeper Schmeichel who was a impregnable wall or the French players blazed the ball away from the post. Denmark too had their moments, as Cornelius shot wide after getting a sniff in.
2nd half started in similar fashion, with both teams looking for that elusive goal. Around the hour mark, Hernandez passed on to Mbappe inside the box, & his side footed shot deflected past Schmeichel into the net, & France went up 1-0. However, their celebrations were cut short soon, as Andreas Christensen headed in from a corner to level the score. A mad scramble followed as both teams searched for an opening & Rabiot tried an acrobatic volley that just went over the bar. On the other side, Martin Braithwaite wasted a golden opportunity as his shot went into the side netting. Minutes later Mbappe found the net, converting a fabulous pass from Greizmann to nose France ahead 2-1.
With 6 points in the bag, France are assured of a knock out place, becoming the first team to do so, while Denmark now play against Australia in a must win game.
