In a see saw battle, Denmark took on a feisty Australia for a place in the knock outs stage. Denmark largely controlled the 1st half, but could not create any clear chances, while the Aussies stormed into the Danish half quite regularly, but could manage any profitable finish. At half time, with a goalless score line it was advantage Australia, as with this score they definitely proceed to the round of 16.
In the 2nd half the Aussies came out more livelier & almost scored when Jackson fired just over the bar. they however got the most important goal around the hour mark, as Mathew Leckie scored from a well picked up counter attack with a neat low finish. Denmark now needing at least two goals to win the tie, tried hard to come back into the match as minutes tickled away - somehow the Danish fire in the belly was missing, as the Australian fans sensing a near upset result started the celebrations. Danes were guilty of poor finishing after reaching the Aussie box time & again.
Finally it was the green & yellow brigade from down under who prevailed, reaching the knock out stages for the 2nd time in their footballing career, as the Aussie party would begin. Denmark ended up distraught for not having taken their chance ending at the bottom of the group, but in the end, it was the superior team of the day that won deservingly.
Australia now await their opponent for the round of 16.
