In a high voltage game at Taunton, champions Australia & unpredictable Pakistan, competed hard & at the end of a see saw battle, it was the Men in Yellow that prevailed over the Men in Green.
Put into bat, Aussie openers Finch & Warner profited from a sloppy Pakistani fielding, full of crucial dropped catches, overthrows, et all, & scored at will to race at more than run a ball, & reached 146 in only 22 overs, before Finch holed out for a well constructed 82 off just 84 deliveries. Warner, breaking all shackles, went on to reach a fabulous 107, but the next batsmen could not capitalise on this fantastic platform, despite starts. From 277 for 4 in 42 overs & promising a score of around 350, they faltered, & stuttered to a 307 all out in 49 overs, as Mohammad Amir claimed his first 5 wickets haul in an ODI, with figures of 5 for 30 in his 10 overs, with 2 maidens. Australia seemed to have lost the initiative & ended with at least 30-35 runs short.
In reply, however, Pakistan lost Fakhar in the 3rd over & Babar Azam in the 11th over, as the Aussie pace bowlers started to control the game. A 80 run partnership between Imam & Hafeez for 3rd wicket gave some hope, but the batsmen to follow faltered as another collapse followed. Capt Sarfaraz & Wahab Riaz batted with purpose & took Pakistan to reaching distance, with around 50 runs needed at around 7 runs an over - very gettable, but then they imploded again as Wahab got out in the 43rd over & the last 3 wickets went down for just 3 runs, as the innings folded for 266 runs, giving Australia a resounding victory by 41 runs.
Warner was the deserving Man of Match, as we witnessed a close match.
