It was a do or die match for the defending champions & one was expecting a display to merit that from the Spanish team....but, they appeared dazed from the previous match drubbing from Netherlands & the end result was a disappointing exit from the group stages itself.
Having won two Euro Cups & the last World Cup, Spain had come into this tournament with very high expectations, seeking their fourth consecutive title....most people had indicated a Brazil - Spain finals, & that demanded a convincing victory today....but it all fizzled out into a loss & eventual exit.
Chile established control from almost the beginning & scored two splendid goals, first by Eduardo Vargas, & then Charles Aranguiz, sealed the match in the first half itself....the famed Spanish Tiki -Taka style was bamboozled out of contention....barring a couple of moves by Iniesta, the whole team looked in disarray. Infusing a struggling Diego Costa upfront proved ineffective, with Torres warming the benches, & the team clearly lacked a striker. Del Bosque's attempt to resurrect the team by making two critical changes in the playing eleven, dropping Pique & Xavi at the start had no impact & he too looked scratching for fresh ideas. Spain fluffed their chances, as Bravo palmed off a Iniesta long ranger & Busquets missed a sitter in the 2nd half. Iker Casillas, skipper under the bar looked woefully out of form, & confidence & this proved fatal for the Spanish armada....having conceded seven goals in roughly 135 minutes of football in this tournament.....ousted out of the Championship even before the group stage matches are completed....a sad end to the golden era of Spanish domination in the World of Football.
Chile, along with Netherlands have now secured a place in the knock out stage & look a good unit. Nippy & organised in their Latin American style of attacking football, Captain Claudio Bravo manning the goal & Alex Sanchez leading upfront, the team has some spirited players in Vidal, Mena, Isla, Jara & Diaz, most of whom play in the Spanish League. They will be a handful ahead, as they play fearless football..... they are expected to bump into Brazil in the next round, unless, they stage another upset, by toppling the marauding Netherlands in their last match of the group...... in which case it will be Brazil vs Netherlands....mouthwatering contest for sure.....Interesting enough eh ???
This tournament is indeed opening up.....
