The reigning Champions, Australia got off to a steady start in this World Cup campaign. Against Zimbabwe, Ponting won the toss & elected to bat, wanting his batters to get as much practice as possible. The Zimbabweian attack was rather efficient & it kept the Aussies on a tight lease, & scoring was not easy. Th openers, Watson & Haddin looked solid, but had difficulty in stroking freely. Later even Ponting, though at ease on teh crease could not get a tempo, which has characterised the Aussies over the years.
In fact, till about the 38th over, the scoring rate was hovering around 4.66 mark.....much below the expectations. I the last 12 odd overs, however Clarke, looking in good nick, along with late middle order batsmen, took charge & mounted the score finally to 262 for six wickets. All the batsmen had got a look in & had crossed into double figures. However, from Zimbabwe perspective, they did not allow the Champions off to a flier.
In reply, Zimbabwe, as expected, struggled against the pace battery of Tait, Lee & Johnson. The score read a dismal 96 for six midway through the innings. Barring some stiff resistance from Cremer, top scoring with 37, Williams with 28 & Utseya with 24, there was hardly any menaingful contribution. The inings folded at 171 in the 47th over, with Johnson picking up 4 for just 19 runs.
Overall, a satisfying & a predictable win by 91 runs for the Aussies.
Man of the match : Shane Watson for his 79 runs in 92 deliveries at the top of the order for Aussies.
